Why a Bad Bed Can Ruin Your Libido

In an earlier post, we discussed some of the symptoms associated with an uncomfortable mattress, and one of these was that a poor mattress could affect your libido. Libido issues can be a worry for both men and women. However, it is something that could be addressed through something as simple as buying a mattress and bed that suits you.

But how does an uncomfortable mattress affect libido?

Can a Lack of Sleep Cause Mental Health Problems?

When you sleep, you are not just resting and rejuvenating your body; you’re doing the same for your brain. A lack of comfortable sleep means the brain is not recovering adequately from the toils of the previous day. Over the course of weeks and months, this can increase the likelihood of anxiety and depression.

And yes – anxiety and depression are issues known to decrease libido. If you have been feeling down in the dumps for no apparent reason, it could be down to your mattress. Moreover, mental health problems caused by a lack of sleep means being less productive and less happy overall.

Does a Lack of Energy Reduce Libido?

There are different stages of sleep essential for a good night’s rest. If that sleep is interrupted for any reason, you will not get the eventual deep, restful sleep that allows the body to recover. Quite often, those who sleep on uncomfortable mattresses wake up feeling more tired than they were before they went to bed.

Lack of energy due to being tired means a detrimental effect on libido.

Poor Sleep Lowers Testosterone Levels

A lack of testosterone is something often associated with getting older. Nevertheless, more young people are now experiencing the same effects of low testosterone levels. When these young people finally get to bed after a night of partying or whatever, trying to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress means no restful sleep, as discussed above, which then also affects testosterone levels. Loss of libido will eventually occur.

As you can see from the above, an uncomfortable mattress could be a significant contributing factor to libido issues. Better sleep equals improved physical and mental health. Take a look at your mattress– is it as comfortable as it should be?

Sleep Apnoea and Your Mattress

It is often joked about. It is an irritation, and very often it leads to one of you going to sleep on the couch in the living room. The snoring is terrible, and neither of you gets a good night’s sleep. The condition is called sleep apnoea, and it can be a very serious medical condition.

Why is it important to diagnose sleep apnoea?

Sleep apnoea is defined as not getting enough air when sleeping, resulting in waking with headaches, grogginess, and irritability, and generally being more tired. In severe cases, the sufferer may stop breathing altogether for quite long stretches at a time; in fact, there have been instances of people dying of the condition.

What causes sleep apnoea?

The most common causes of sleep apnoea are:
  • Being overweight
  • bad sleeping posture
  • drugs
  • unhealthy lifestyle
  • age.
How can a new mattress help with sleep apnoea?

It is well known that the right mattress provides the necessary support for your body to achieve a good sleeping posture. Combined with the correct type of pillow, the mattress plays a crucial role in your quest for a good night’s sleep. Sleep apnoea prevents you from achieving the deep sleep that you need to wake up rested and ready for the day. When your mattress helps your sleep posture, you will be less likely to snore or develop sleep apnoea, and therefore you’ll have the peaceful sleep that you need.

This is why you need to be very careful when choosing your next mattress. Although you may be tempted to pick a cheap, softer mattress, this may be the totally wrong choice for your situation. If you are shopping in-store, speak to one of our mattress experts and try out the mattress before you commit to buying. If you’re shopping online, feel free to contact us for any information you require. It is important that you and your loved ones get the sleep (and rest) needed and deserved.

3 Things to Know About Your Mattress

Did you know that you will spend about a third of your life lying on your bed? When you think about it in these terms, the bed is one item of furniture you cannot afford to ignore. And if the bed is that important, then obviously so is the mattress. When buying a new mattress, there are a few useful things you should know. This will help you make the right buying decision.
1. Does it Contain Flame-Retardant Material?

British law states that a mattress must contain some sort of flame-retardant to comply with British regulations (BS 5852: 1982 Part II & BS 7177). This is to protect you in the case of a fire. The problem is that many artificial flame-retardants are made from toxic chemicals. One of the most common is polybrominated diphenyl, which can be harmful to health. This is something to consider.

2. Could Your Allergies Get Worse?

Sometimes wool is used as mattress stuffing. Unfortunately, wool is one of the main breeding grounds for dust mites, which can cause allergies to flare up. Many people have allergic reactions to a mattress and do not know why;it is often from the wool.

3. Does a Mattress Contain Pesticides?

Cotton and synthetic fibres are often contained within mattresses. There may or may not be pesticides within these fabrics. The only way to avoid this issue is choosing a mattress made from natural materials.

How Do You Make Sure Your Mattress is Safe to Health?

All you need to do is ask questions. The best way to make sure that your mattress has what you need is to ask the retailer. Find out what mattresses are made from as well as what checks they go through to ensure comfort and support. At Beds Glasgow, we go out of our way to answer all the questions customers ask of us the best we can.
