Mattress Topper or Mattress Protector?

When you buy a mattress, you are sometimes confronted with the questions ‘Do you want a mattress topper?’ and ‘Do you want a mattress protector?’. Very often, if you know what the difference between the two is, the answer would be ‘Yes’ to both questions. But, many people do not know the difference and only choose one of the two – thinking that they are essentially the same thing. This is not true. There is a significant difference between them, and it is important to know if you are planning on buying a mattress.

What is a Mattress Topper?

A mattress topper acts as an extension of the mattress. It gives the mattress a little extra height, depth, and cushioning, making the mattress more comfortable and durable. You can also buy a mattress topper for your old mattress if you want to spruce it up a bit. It will breathe new life into your mattress and give you extra comfort. When you buy sheets for a mattress with a mattress topper on, you need to look for sheets with extra depth (if you’re buying fitted sheets) or a bigger sheet (if you are buying normal sheets).

What is a Mattress Protector?

A mattress protector is like an extra sheet that you put on your bed. It has a special insert in the middle that is waterproof and prevents liquids such as sweat from staining and wetting your mattress. It is relatively thin, so it will not add any height or depth to your mattress. Some protectors also help to keep the bed fresh by preventing dust mites and other allergens from getting onto the mattress.

Can You Use the Two Together?

You can easily put a mattress topper on your old or new mattress and then cover it with a mattress protector. That way you extend the lifespan of both the mattress as well as the mattress topper. Then you make the bed with the sheets and other bedding that you want to put onto the bed for maximum comfort.

If you are not sure about your options, speak to our friendly staff here at Beds Glasgow. We have the knowledge and experience to give you sound advice and guidance about the mattress accessory that will suit your needs.

Ways To Care For An Ageing Mattress

When it comes to a healthy night’s sleep, following these tips can help care for your ageing mattress allowing you to sleep better. The following tips allow to keep your mattress fit for purpose into its later life.

Experts recommend that you replace your mattress every 8 years. This ensures that your mattress is giving you the support you need, is hygienic & provide you with the sleep you need.

Independent experts have found that older mattresses that suffered years of wear and tear significantly lost height & contained a covering of skin cells, dust and fibres. Dust mites in old mattresses can also affect allergies. Have a look at our tips below to ensure you will get eight restful years on your mattress.

Regularly Rotate: Make sure you regularly rotate your mattress to vary the areas of prolonged impact when you sleep as your mattress can suffer from dips and compression after long term use. Also check to see if your mattress is turnable & make sure you turn your mattress regularly as well.

Air It: Make sure when you first purchase a mattress, the mattress is aired for around four hours. You should regularly air your mattress throughout it’s lifetime. airing the mattress allows body moisture to evaporate from it. Taking the opportunity to ventilate your mattress by removing bed covers etc for 20 minutes a day and longer periods when you are away from home will preserve freshness.

Use A Mattress Topper/Protector: Using a mattress topper or a protector preserve the condition of your mattress & also add a level of comfort to your bed. For advice on toppers/protectors contact our customer services on 0141 554 0792.

Avoid Sitting On The Edge: Try and avoid sitting on the edge of your mattress for prolonged periods of time. We all do it from time to time, but try finding a chair as sitting on the edge of the mattress can have detrimental effects.

Vacuum: Make sure that you vacuum your mattress every two to three months. This is something that many people don’t do and it can impact the hygiene of your mattress. Make sure to vacuum to ensure that you are getting rid of dead skin cells and dust mites that have gathered on your mattress.

Don’t Fold It/Walk or Jump on It: If you need to move your mattress, make sure you don’t fold it as it can damage the interior and will reduce the quality of the comfort & support of your mattress. As well as folding, don’t walk, stand or jump on your mattress as this will also damage the contents of the mattress.

Why a Bad Bed Can Ruin Your Libido

In an earlier post, we discussed some of the symptoms associated with an uncomfortable mattress, and one of these was that a poor mattress could affect your libido. Libido issues can be a worry for both men and women. However, it is something that could be addressed through something as simple as buying a mattress and bed that suits you.

But how does an uncomfortable mattress affect libido?

Can a Lack of Sleep Cause Mental Health Problems?

When you sleep, you are not just resting and rejuvenating your body; you’re doing the same for your brain. A lack of comfortable sleep means the brain is not recovering adequately from the toils of the previous day. Over the course of weeks and months, this can increase the likelihood of anxiety and depression.

And yes – anxiety and depression are issues known to decrease libido. If you have been feeling down in the dumps for no apparent reason, it could be down to your mattress. Moreover, mental health problems caused by a lack of sleep means being less productive and less happy overall.

Does a Lack of Energy Reduce Libido?

There are different stages of sleep essential for a good night’s rest. If that sleep is interrupted for any reason, you will not get the eventual deep, restful sleep that allows the body to recover. Quite often, those who sleep on uncomfortable mattresses wake up feeling more tired than they were before they went to bed.

Lack of energy due to being tired means a detrimental effect on libido.

Poor Sleep Lowers Testosterone Levels

A lack of testosterone is something often associated with getting older. Nevertheless, more young people are now experiencing the same effects of low testosterone levels. When these young people finally get to bed after a night of partying or whatever, trying to sleep on an uncomfortable mattress means no restful sleep, as discussed above, which then also affects testosterone levels. Loss of libido will eventually occur.

As you can see from the above, an uncomfortable mattress could be a significant contributing factor to libido issues. Better sleep equals improved physical and mental health. Take a look at your mattress– is it as comfortable as it should be?

How Long Does It Take to Get Used to a New Mattress?

Recently, we have been talking about some of the symptoms of an uncomfortable mattress. Let’s say that you’ve recognised that you need a new mattress and have bought one (hopefully from us). Falling in love with a new mattress is the exception rather than the rule. For most people, a little time is needed to get used to a new sleep system.

Does it Take Long?

Most find they need up to a month to get used to a brand-new mattress. This period may be longer if you previously used a ‘bad’ mattress for an extended period. Sleeping on a mattress that doesn’t sink and squeal is a new experience for the body, and it needs to get used to that. Sometimes, the fantastic adaptation benefits the body affords can also be a curse too.

What Should You Expect During the Adjustment Period?

Experts are well aware that there’s an adjustment period that comes with mattresses. But no new mattress should be uncomfortable. What you may experience is more tossing and turning than you are used to as the body gets used to the new mattress.

This is especially noticeable with a memory foam mattress, which moulds to the body. Think of it as the body’s way of finding the most comfortable position in a new sleeping spot.

Don’t Give Up Too Soon

Not falling in love with your mattress immediatey does not mean you should give it up. Mattresses can sometimes be like a new pair of shoes. You need to break it in. Try out your mattress for a few weeks before reaching a conclusion that it is not what you expected.

If you do decide to exchange the mattress for another one, you will need to go through the adjustment period again. This is why retailers are so careful with educating consumers about when they should and should not give up on a mattress.

It is also why the industry standard has been to offer a ‘comfort guarantee’. Retailers offering guarantees from the 30-day mark are taking into account the adjustment period.

How did you deal with your adjustment period?

Yes – It’s National Bed Month Again

Welcome to the month of March. If you are in the bedding industry, you know what that means: we are now in the midst of National Bed Month. If you are not in the industry, you may not know that 2017 marks the 27th straight year of recognising National Bed Month in the UK. This is the month we talk about mattresses, sleeping, and all things beds. We are on board here at Beds Glasgow.

So what exactly is National Bed Month? It is an annual campaign to help raise awareness of sleep-related issues and how these can be addressed through quality bedding. The campaign is a great educational opportunity inasmuch as many people don’t understand how poor quality bedding interrupts good sleep.

Do you follow our weekly blog posts? If so, you know our previous two posts listed signs suggesting you might be sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress without knowing it. Now consider the fact that longevity has a lot to do with whether the mattress you are sleeping on is comfortable. A high-quality mattress should last between 10 and 20 years before breaking down sufficiently enough to interrupt your sleep. Of course, you will pay more for quality.

Better Sleep Is Much Needed

From our perspective, there is another topic – sleep deprivation – that is just as important to talk about during National Bed Month as the quality of your mattress. Numerous studies over the last couple of years clearly show that kids are getting less sleep and suffering for it both physically and emotionally. And, unfortunately, they are learning bad sleep habits from parents who are not giving enough attention to good sleep.

If you are sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress, now would be a good time to replace it. But please pay attention to your sleep habits too. Make a point of establishing a routine bedtime, disconnect (turn off electronic devices) at least an hour before bed, and remove the TV from your bedroom. Make bedtime sleep time for at least 8 to 10 hours per night. You will be better off for it.

3 Symptoms of an Uncomfortable Mattress

Imagine seeing a television advert in which a spokes person asks if your bed mattress is really comfortable. You eventually come to the conclusion that you don’t really know. In fact, you’ve never thought about whether you’re comfortable enough in bed to get a good night’s sleep.

Sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress without knowing it is not that unusual. Most mattresses just at the verge of breaking down begin to make their occupants just uncomfortable enough to interrupt sleep yet not enough to make it obvious that a lack of comfort is the problem.

Here are three symptoms that suggest you might be sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress:

1. You’re Drowsy During the Day

If you are uncomfortable in bed, you may doze off without ever falling into REM sleep. REM sleep is that deep sleep we all need. Finding yourself constantly drowsy during the day at least tells you you’re not getting enough restful sleep, and the reason may be the comfort of your mattress. You may be just comfortable enough to fall asleep but not enough to find that place of REM rest.

2. You Wake up with Back Pain

You don’t actually have to be restless all night to know you’re sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress. Waking up every morning with back pain is a good sign that your mattress is no longer providing the kind of support you need. Remember that a mattress should provide enough support to keep your spine and head properly aligned throughout the night. One that is beginning to break down doesn’t provide that support.

Checkout the wide selection of divans and quality mattresses with delivery within 20 mile radius at Bed Shop Glasgow

3. You Toss and Turn All Night

There are plenty of people who toss and turn all night, attributing their sleeping problems to stress or an inability to turn the brain off. Stress and thinking too much certainly can interrupt sleep. However, physical discomfort can have you tossing and turning without you even realising it. If you find yourself waking up multiple times during the night just to turn over, there’s a fairly strong likelihood you’re not comfortable.

Avoid Cold Sheets by Hiring a Pro Bed Warmer

Some six or seven years ago, select hotel chains in the UK began offering human bed warming services to clients willing to pay to have a warm bed to climb into. We’re not sure how well it was received, or even if the hotels still offer the service, but we do know a young Russian entrepreneur has become that country’s first professional bed warmer.

Human bed warmer Viktoria Ivachyova is an enterprising 21-year-old who charges £65 per night or £1,350 per month to warm client bedsheets and leave behind which she calls ‘positive energy’ to help encourage restful sleep. She visits the client’s home to lay the bed for an hour so that it is toasty warm when the occupant or occupants are ready for sleep. As you might expect, Viktoria does not allow any physical contact.

She does carry a personal alarm that can immediately contact a security team in case she gets into trouble. She also brings her own pyjamas and, according to her own words, is a great listener. Clients are more than welcome to sit and talk with her while she warms the bed.

Customers are already lining up to hire Viktoria despite her service potentially being perceived as costly. She told the Mirror that she is already looking to hire more women to help her meet demand.

A Great Way to Sell Beds

So there you have it. If you live anywhere within Viktoria’s service area, you never have to climb into a cold bed again. Just hire her to come in and warm things up for you. If her idea takes off on a large scale, the future might be one of bed and mattress retailers offering free or reduced cost bed warming for new customers. Wouldn’t that be an interesting selling point?

Beds Glasgow can’t offer you human bed warming service, at least for now. But we do have one of the best selections of beds and mattresses online. We invite you to browse our inventory for your next bed and mattress set.

Promising Indications

Recent figures have shown promising signs of ‘steady’ growth as imports are set to increase market share. The data, which was compiled by AMA Research, revealed that the UK upholstered furniture and beds market rose by around 3-4 per cen teach year until 2015 and is expected to increase by another three per cent in 2016.

Noticeable Increase

The beds sector had seen a noticeable increase in double and king-size beds due to competition in the market while mattress sales have seen growth in pocket sprung models along with other materials such as memory foam. The beds sector has also seen growth from those businesses using internet-only sales.

Research manager at AMA Research, Hayley Thornley, said, “The popularity of modern and contemporary furniture seems to favour alternative furniture combinations, rather than the traditional 3-piece suites. Other trends include flexible and modular furniture options to allow for open plan living areas and awkward spaces. This is also reflected in the range of design options now offered, including corner sofas, u-shaped sofas and chaise sofas.”

Reliable and Top Quality Mattresses from Beds Glasgow

Purchasing a new mattress can be quite daunting, often seen as a chore by many. However, when you shop with us here at Beds Glasgow, we will ensure that your buying experience is enjoyable and that, ultimately, you are totally satisfied with your purchase. Unlike the lady in our story below.

Horrified

The lady in question was horrified to find what appeared to be blood stains on her ‘new’ mattress. Johanna McHugh paid £140 for the mattress, which was described as ‘brand new looking’ in the online advert. However, once she received it and unwrapped the plastic packaging, she noticed stains that looked like blood. “I just went nuts after I saw that. I said it was disgusting selling a bed like that to anyone,” she explained. It was not just the mattress where there was an issue with; the divan base’s hessian was torn and tattered as well.

Refurbished Mattresses

She contacted the firm to request a full refund but was instead told to send in pictures of the damaged goods. She soon found that the advertisers were based in Birmingham, despite the Gumtree advert she had seen suggesting that the beds were from Swindon. The company had advertised the mattresses as “Totally in as 100% immaculate condition (not new but look totally as 100% SHOWROOM brand new)”.

A spokesperson for the company insisted that the adverts made it clear that the mattresses are all refurbished. The mattress that Mrs McHugh had received was a one-off, but he would be offering her a refund. He added, “There is no law against selling refurbished mattresses. Our policy is that if there is a complaint we will exchange it. It’s about negotiation. We offered to exchange.”

Reliable Source

We cannot comment on why the lady in question opted for the particular mattress she did, but when buying a mattress from Beds Glasgow, you can rest assured that you are buying from a reliable source. All our mattresses are brand new, top quality and affordable; and they all come with the relevant paperwork and tags as well. For more information, contact us today.

How Placebo Pills Can Help to Reduce Back Pain

Those who suffer from chronic back pain would likely do anything to help ease their symptoms. And results of a new study from researchers at Harvard medical school have found that patients knowingly taking a placebo for their pain improved more than patients who took medication for it.

Placebo Effect
In most human trials, a section of participants will be given a placebo drug so that scientists can compare the results between the real medication and a non-active pill. Those who participate in these studies do not usually know whether they have been allocated the active or non-active medicationor not.

However, in this study, patients with chronic back pain knew they were taking a placebo. On average, this group reported a thirty per cent pain reduction after a three-week course compared to a nine to sixteen per cent reduction among those who were taking active pain medication.

Brain Power

Ted Kaptchuk, the study author, said that the results of the research showed that, while back pain is a very real condition, individuals have the brain power to relieve more discomfort than they realise. He added, “You’re never going to shrink a tumour or unclog an artery with placebo intervention. It’s not a cure-all, but it makes people feel better, for sure. Our lab is saying you can’t throw the placebo into the trash can. It has clinical meaning, it’s statistically significant, and it relieves patients. It’s essential to what medicine means.”

Claudia Carvalho, who co-authored the study, said that it is important for patients to feel cared for, and added, “Taking placebo pills to relieve symptoms without a warm and empathic relationship with a healthcare provider relationship probably would not work.”

A Comfortable Bed

While medication and placebo pills obviously help with back pain, a good comfortable bed can also work wonders. Here at Beds Glasgow, we have a superb range of beds and mattresses made to provide the ultimate comfort every single night.

Check out our fabulous range of mattresses, which includes orthopaedic options and memory foam for added comfort.

Could Counselling Help When It Comes to Treating Back Pain?

One of the most common problems that people have these days is back pain, and those who suffer from it know how excruciating it can be. Many will head straight to their doctor or take to their bed when they have back pain, but often it can be a poor mattress that contributes to the pain in the first place.

For those who are in need of a new mattress and suffer regular or occasional back pain, an orthopaedic mattress might be the ideal choice. Orthopaedic mattresses provide plenty of support for the lumbar region while many have hypo-allergenic properties that also make them the perfect choice for those with allergies.

Counselling for Back Pain?

Medication, physio and good support are often the preferred remedies for back pain, but new research has now suggested that social and psychological factors could be one of the causes of back pain. And based on this, researchers recommend that treatment for the issue should include counselling.

David Rogers is a leading physiotherapist who has been practising a psychological approach to back pain for the past six years at Birmingham’s Royal Orthopaedic Hospital. He believes that certain thinking patterns can contribute to back pain, and he has a number of techniques that have proved to be effective when treating the condition.

He said, “Research has identified that psychological and social factors such as the way patients think about their back pain, as well as depression and anxiety are stronger predictors of long-term pain and disability than physical factors.”

Many people are afraid to move when they have back pain because they fear they will make the problem worse, hence causing depression, anxiety and distress, which consequently can all make the pain worse. Changing thinking through the use of counselling can be very effective when treating back pain.

Preventing Back Problems

There is no doubting that prevention of back pain is important, and one way to do this is with good support at night. Here at Beds Glasgow, we have a range of orthopaedic mattresses that will support your back while you sleep, helping to reduce any discomfort or pain.

Contact us today for more information or to find out more about our fantastic prices on beds and mattresses.

Can Yoga Prevent Back Pain?

Back pain is something that will affect most people at some point in their life. It is not usually a serious condition, but it can be extremely painful. Those who suffer from back pain will commonly find themselves heading straight to their bed for a lie-down. What they are not considering, though, is that the bed could actually be the cause of their problems.

An orthopaedic mattress might be the answer to these individuals’ back problems. This type of mattress provides support to the lumbar region of the back, making them ideal for those suffering from lower back problems. Another great feature of these mattresses is that most are manufactured from hypo-allergenic materials, making them ideal for those who suffer from allergies as well as back pain.

Yoga to Treat Back Pain

Most people will opt for physio or medication if they are experiencing severe back pain. However, new research has shown that yoga can be effective in helping to reduce this back pain.

Robert B. Saper, MD, director of integrative medicine at Boston Medical Centre in the United States presented his study at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Management 2016. He said, “It’s effectiveness was most obvious among those who stayed with the yoga.”

The study enrolled 320 adult patients from community health centres in Boston who suffered from chronic back pain with no apparent causes. Patients were randomly assigned to one of three groups:

1. Yoga
2. Education
3. PT

The yoga group had a weekly class lasting seventy-five minutes and also had a very low student-to-teacher ratio. The PT group had fifteen, sixty-minute sessions that were on a one-to-one basis, which included aerobic exercises. The education group received a voluminous book on back pain.

Those who took part in the yoga reported being ‘very satisfied’ and ‘very improved’.

Affordable Orthopaedic Mattresses

Purchasing a new bed can be challenging for many people, due to a variety of reasons, including health issues and cost. Nevertheless, Beds Glasgow has a huge range of affordable beds that include orthopaedic mattresses that can support your back and minimise pain when sleeping.

Testimonials are Important When Choosing a Reliable Bed Supplier

You have to know that your chosen bed and mattress supplier provides first-class products and a professional service; what better way to find out than from their customer testimonials?

What’s great about the bed, mattress, and furniture industry, in general, is that there is a lot of competition, even in a smaller country like Scotland. This ensures that customers get the best treatment possible, with just about every bed supplier trying their hardest.

It can sometimes be difficult to choose from the wide array of different bed suppliers, however, one of the best ways to help you come to a decision is by reading a supplier’s customer testimonials. What better way is there to find out how well a company operates than by hearing from their past clients?

Below we’ll go through some of the reasons that testimonials are important when choosing a reliable bed supplier.

Find Out About Their Furniture

Beds Glasgow has decades of combined experience in the furniture industry between every member of our expert team, meaning that we almost always get positive feedback on our service through customer testimonials.

View Their Furniture Variety

You can get a sense for the range of furniture that a supplier has on offer by both customer testimonials and usually from looking through their online catalogue. How to Create a Hotel-Style Bed in Your Home

Hotel beds often provide the ultimate in comfort, meaning many people wonder how to recreate the magic when they get back home after a hotel stay.

In light of this, you’ll be happy to know that there are a few things you can do to make your bed at home feel just like a hotel bed.

Create the Look

The first thing to do to help you feel as though you are in a hotel is to use white bedding. Most top hotels use white sheets and pillowcases. If you think that white might be too boring or plain, you could always add a splash of colour with cushions or a bed skirt.

Make the Bed

There is definitely an art to bed-making, and hotel staff quickly learn how to make a bed with comfort in mind. The first thing to do is to place the bottom sheet over the mattress and make sure it is tucked in tight, especially if it is not a fitted sheet. Hotels tend to use sheets and blankets rather than duvets, so place another sheet on top of the first and make sure you leave room at the top to fold it back on itself.

Perfect Pillows

Finding the right pillow can be a troublesome task because it is impossible to tell how comfortable it will be in the shop. Hotels tend to have a choice of pillows – ranging from firm to soft – to ensure that all guests are as comfortable as possible. Thankfully, there are some stores where you can test various pillows until you find the right one. This is a good idea if you want to make sure you get that hotel comfort in your home.

A New Bed?

Buying a new bed might seem a huge expense, but you may be surprised at how reasonably priced they are here at Beds Glasgow. If your current bed is nearing the end of its useful life, we can help. With a huge range of bed frames and styles in various materials, you will find exactly what you are looking for at a price to suit any budget. We have a variety of divan beds, fabric beds, leather beds and metal beds, all in a choice of sizes and styles, so whatever your taste, you will find the perfect bed.

For the best bed sales in Glasgow, choose Beds Glasgow. You can get in touch with our friendly team at 0141 554 0792 or send us a secure email at sales@bedsglasgow.com

Buy Beds in Glasgow

It’s always good advice to buy beds in Glasgow from a reputable and well-established bed supplier; this is how you ensure you get real value for your money.

Beds Glasgow has been helping valued clients buy beds in Glasgow for years; bringing quality beds to the people at bargain prices is what we do best. It might sound simple to buy beds in Glasgow; however, there are many different factors to consider when deciding to invest in a shiny new bed. From choosing a bed type and size to considering different mattress options, choosing the right bed can be confusing.

Below we’ll go through the 3 main factors that make it easier to buy beds in Glasgow; knowing these options means being able to buy the perfect bed without hesitation.

Choosing a Bed Type

When you decide to buy beds in Glasgow, you may or may not have a clear-cut idea of what type of bed you are looking for. It may be simple and obvious, like a quality bunk bed for two children, or it could be something more complex and luxurious like a memory foam ottoman bed; either way you need to narrow down your search.

If you’re looking to buy beds in Glasgow and find yourself unsure as to what to order, speak to one of our experts, they can advise you based on your needs and wants.

Choosing a Bed Size

This is perhaps the most obvious factor to consider when you buy beds in Glasgow, however, you may be surprised to know that many people buy beds that are a little too big for the room they plan on placing it in! When you’ve decided that you require a single, double, queen-sized, or king-sized bed, always remember to check that your new bed will fit well into your bedroom, otherwise, you could run into problems.

Remember, it’s not always about whether the bed will fit into the room or not, it’s also about whether you feel comfortable and relaxed in the size of bed you plan on sleeping in.

Choosing the Right Mattress

A bed is no good without the right mattress; apart from being the right size, you’ll want to consider what level of comfort you require from your mattress. Some prefer a firm mattress that isn’t too soft, while others prefer a very comfy mattress they can sink into; memory foam is also another popular choice, especially with those who have back or neck issues.

Be sure to get an idea of what level of comfort you like, especially if you can find a specific number of pockets you prefer on pocket spring mattresses.
