How Long Should You Sleep at Night?

For many years, there has been much debate as to how many hours of sleep the average person should get every night. Some people swear by eight hours a night, other say you only need around six! However, there are two things most people will agree with, that the number of hours of sleep you need depends on your age, and that you should always sleep on a great-quality bed.

But why does it matter so much as to how much sleep you get? The answer may not as obvious as you think. Some researchers have looked at sleeping habits and concluded that you can both not get enough sleep, and sleep too much. What constitutes ‘not enough’ and ‘too much’ is debatable, but what Beds Glasgow will do is show you how many hours of sleep is recommended for each age group.

For Children (Age 6 to 9)

Of course, you want your little ones to be as awake and alert as possible for their school work and development. Researchers say that children in this age range require around 9 to 11 hours per night for a healthy sleep cycle. This may seem like a lot, but it all makes sense when you consider how much and how fast children are developing, both mentally and physically.

For Pre-Teens/Teenagers (Age 10 to 17)

The stereo type for teenagers is that they can be lazy and always sleepy in school, however, the research says that teens definitely require a fair amount of sleep at night for a healthy sleep cycle.

It is recommended that teenagers get around 8 to 10 hours per night, mainly due to quick development brought on by puberty. A healthy sleep also means better performance in school!

For Adults (Age 18 to 64)
Hours of sleep begin to decrease when you hit adulthood, which comes as no surprise with all the new responsibilities that come with age.

Researchers say that this age group needs around 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night, however, some can get away with 6. This is quite a range of hours, though many find that they naturally gravitate towards the shorter or longer duration within this range.

For Older Adults (Age 65+)

Old age is when you need the least sleep of all according to sleep researchers. With just 7 to 8 hours per night required, you’ll have plenty of time to relax and enjoy your day. It is said that even 5 hours of sleep at night is ok if you plan on napping throughout the day.

Beds Glasgow Says Quality Over Quantity

While it’s important to get enough hours of sleep per night to function at your best during the day, the quality of your sleep is what is really important. 8 hours of sleep in a bad quality bed or mattress can be like 5 hours of good sleep in a quality bed, so it’s worth investing in comfort.

By having a comfy new mattress or bed in a comfortable room, you’re much more likely to relish the sleep you get, meaning that even if you don’t get as many hours of sleep as you had hoped, those hours you did get will still be of very high quality.
